For Ray's September Episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, he's trying to break up his streak of heavy subject matters by recommending the 2017 comedy THE BIG SICK. It centers on Kumail, a struggling comedian who is caught in the maelstrom of the Pakistani tradition of arranged marriage by his overbearing family. When he meets Emily, an American woman, she steals his heart but puts him in a very precarious familial situation, one that threatens to end his relationship with Emily for good. When a mysterious illness puts Emily in a coma, Kumail must decide what is truly important to him and how he wants to ultimately live his life. With stellar supporing performances by Holly Hunter (RAISING ARIZONA, HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS), Ray Romano (EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND) and Zoe Kazan (RUBY SPARKS, WHAT IF) and based on the semi-autobiographical tale of actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his real-life wife Emily, THE BIG SICK is a singular romantic comedy cut from its own cloth.

This true American classic stars a Jack Nicholson (CHINATOWN, THE SHINING) in the iconic role of Bobby Dupea, an oil worker with a privileged past that he must confront when he learns his father has suffered multiple strokes and his days are numbered. Accompanied on his journey by his eccentric girlfriend Rayette (played by the powerhouse of 70s cinema Karen Black), Bobby searches for who he is and what he truly wants from life. Born from one of the great New Hollywood production companies, BBS Productions, FIVE EASY PIECES is the great American film that embodies the changing landscape of counterculture America and the evolving face of the Hollywood industry.

For Ray's September SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM selection, he has decided to do a sequel, not of a film he's already shown but of a conversation he and Rob began last month with THE LORD OF THE FLIES. To fulfill this, he has chosen the 2015 drama THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT. This tale of a real-life experiment conducted on the Standford University campus in 1971 centers on a group of students who agree to participate by being divided into prisoners and guards to see how each side would react. As with LORD OF THE FLIES, the darker sides of humanity bubble to the surface as the effects of power lead to torment for the unfortunate students relegated to be prisoners. Featuring stellar performances by Billy Crudup (WATCHMAN, BIG FISH, ALMOST FAMOUS), Tye Sharidan (MUD, READY PLAYER ONE), Ezra Miller (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, THE FLASH) and many others, THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT is a chilling study of people and the abuse of power that possibly lays dormant within us all.

It's fair to say that for Ray and Rob, the 1990s were the golden age of Disney animation. The run of hits holds a special nostalgic place in both of their hearts. At the top of that mountain sits ALADDIN, the story the young street urchin who with the help of magical genie, wins the heart of the princess Jasmine and defeats the evil Jafar. Over the last decade, Disney has seen fit to once again repackage these classics in live action versions in an attempt to bank on that nostalgia and line their pockets in the process. Because of this phenomenon, Ray and Rob decided to look at the original ALADDIN and it's 2019 counterpart to decide, is this really just a cash grab? Or is there more than meets the eye?

Rob is kicking off August's SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM by recommending a film to Ray that holds a special place in his heart, the 1991 Coen Brothers classic BARTON FINK! Starring John Turturro (THE BIG LEBOWSKI, O' BROTHER WHERE ART THOU?) and John Goodman (RAISING ARIZONA, THE BIG LEBOWSKI), BARTON FINK centers on a rising star playwright of the same name as he takes a job in 1940s Hollywood to pen a wrestling picture for a mid-level studio. After relocating to a crumbling hotel with distracting neighbors and peeling wallpaper, Barton finds himself with a debilitating case of writer's block. As he tries desperately to overcome it, he encounters a cadre of zany characters that only seem to add to his predicament. BARTON FINK comes from the early period of the Coen's filmography (pre iconic films like FARGO and THE BIG LEBOWSKI), it is an often overlooked classic written by writers who either love writers or hates them! (You decide!)

Ray and Rob are currently on a bit of a cold streak here on HELLO MOVIES, MY OLD FRIEND, so they're hoping to break the trend by revisiting a long-lost classic from their collective childhoods, the 1987 heist comedy BURGLAR! This film based on the 1954 book by Sir William Golding stars a young Balthazar Getty as Ralph, the natural leader of a band of military students who find themselves stranded on a remote island after a savage plane crash. With no hope in sight, the group take to setting up their society which quickly becomes treacherous as factions break off and tensions begin to rise. With supporting performances by Chris Furrh (EXILE, A FAMILY FOR JOE), Danuel Pipoly (THE TORKELSONS, THE GIANT OF THUNDER MOUNTAIN and a debut performance by JAMES BADGE DALE (THE DEPARTED, IRON MAN 3), this slice of classic literature dissects how long society can stand when all rules seem to fade away.

It's time again for a brand-new episode of A COPY OF A COPY! This week, Ray and Rob are examining what they're calling the "stealth remake" in which a movie is an obvious remake of an older movie but is not explicitly marketed as such. For this version of the remake, they're watching one of Rob's favorite film, CASABLANCA starring the acting giants Humphrey Bogart (HIGH SIERRA, IN A LONELY PLACE) and Ingrid Bergman (NOTORIOUS, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS) and the cult dystopian action film, BARB WIRE. This Pamela Anderson (BAYWATCH, THE LAST SHOWGIRL) vehicle was a critical and box office failure but has found an audience in the proceeding decades. 
Did the makers of Barb Wire hide the fact it's a remake to avoid the comparison to one of Hollywood's greatest triumphs? Or was it to allow BARB WIRE the chance to soar on its own merits? Tune as Ray and Rob dissect these two films look at this variation on the remake!
