Monday Aug 26, 2024

On this week's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, Ray and Rob continue to try and break their dry streak of unsuccessful recommendations. It's Ray's week, so swings for the fences with Peter Yates' 1979 film BREAKING AWAY. This coming-of-age sports-drama stars Dennis Christopher (CHARIOTS OF FIRE), Jackie Earle Haley (WATCHMEN, LITTLE CHILDREN) Dennis Quaid (INNERSPACE, THE RIGHT STUFF), and is the screen debut of Daniel Stern (HOME ALONE, CITY SLICKERS).
Dennis Christopher plays Dave, a young cyclist who is obsessed with the Italian racing team. Along with his band of misfit friends (Haley, Quaid and Stern), they make a pact to waste their lives together the year after finishing high school in Bloomington, IN. When Dave's dreams of meeting his idles takes an unexpected turn and the local college kids torment them day after day, the gang of "Cutters" find themselves with the opportunity to prove their worth in the only way Dave knows how, on his bike.
Will this story of lifelong friendships and perseverance finally break away from Ray and Rob's cold streak? Or will they find they need to take another lap and try again?
Tune in this week to find out!

In this week's episode, Rob tries to win Ray over by taking a tonal left turn from his previous pick by recommending Kelly Reichardt's 2016 classic CERTAIN WOMEN. This quiet and meditative journey through the lives of four Montana women features the screen debut of Lily Gladstone (KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, RESERVATION DOGS), as well as Laura Dern (BLUE VELVET, JURASSIC PARK), Michelle Williams (WENDY AND LUCY, BLUE VALENTINE) and Kristen Stewart (ADVENTURELAND, CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA). Each vignette (adapted from the short stories of Maile Malloy) explores the pitfalls of relationships, human interaction and the human need to be seen and lends itself perfectly to the bucolic style that Reichardt has become known for.
Will this shift in tonal style prove enough to win Ray over? Or will the naturalist human interactions leave Ray wanting more? Tune in this week to find out!

After their controversial last episode, Ray and Rob are back with what could turn out to be a revenge story. Ray pushes Rob's emotional buttons by recommending the 2018 family drama BEAUTIFUL BOY. This story about the ravages of addiction stars Steve Carell (The Office, Despicable Me) as a father who desperately tries to find a way to put his life back together after his son, Timothee Chalamet (Dune, Bones and All), spirals out of control in the clutches of drugs. Taking place over a number of years, Beautiful Boy chronicles the ups and downs, the love and hate, and the struggles with trust on the road the redemption.

Will the emotional depths of this family drama pull on Rob's heartstrings? Or will Steve Carell's comedic background keep him from being able to take this film seriously? Tune in this week to find out!

In what go down as their most controversial episode yet, Rob throws Ray the curveball of his life by recommending John Waters' (CRY BABY, CECIL B. DEMENTED) infamous 1972 dark comedy PINK FLAMINGOS.
In this John Waters classic, Divine (HAIRSPRAY, FEMALE TROUBLE) plays Babs Johnson who has been dubbed the "The Filthiest Person Alive" by the tabloids becomes the target of the Marbles, a jealous couple who oversee a baby mill filled with kidnapped women. As the war of trash escalates, Divine and the Marbles come face to face in a climax that has to be seen to be believed. This counterculture classic put John Waters on the map and helped create the "Midnight Movie" by running in Los Angeles for 10 consecutive years.
Will the filthiest person alive be able to win over Ray and see him jump on the cult classic train? Or will the Pope of Trash prove too much and send Ray running for the hills? You don't want to miss this episode to find out!

Be prepared to cry, folks! On this week's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, Ray recommends to Rob the 2016 biographical drama LION. Dev Patel (MONKEY MAN, THE GREEN KNIGHT) stars alongside Nicole Kidman (DESTROYER, THE BEGUILED) and David Wenham (LORD OF THE RINGS, ELVIS), as Saroo, a man who has found himself lost in life in more ways than one. As a child, Saroo followed his older brother Guddu on a tragic night to hopefully earn money for their family in impoverished India. When Saroo becomes separated from his brother by thousands of kilometers, he ultimately finds himself adopted by a family across the ocean in Australia. As an adult, he discovers he must reckon with his past and cull through his long-suppressed memories to find his way home.
Will this story of strength and perseverance steal Rob's heart? Or will the film's structure leave him scratching his head? Join us to find out!
fighting other people's wars? Join us as we explore this idea when Rob recommends to Ray the Park Chan-Wook (OLDBOY, SNOWPIERCER) classic JOINT SECURITY AREA.
When an incident in Korea's DMZ sees the death of two North Korean soldiers and differing stories from the survivors, a Neutral Nations Supervisory Commision special investigatior must get to the bottom of the event, which leads to some surprising truths. In our ever divided world, JSA is a story that shows how those divisions are built and can ultimately be torn down but asks the question, can they truly stay that way?
Will this taut political thriller give Ray hope that humanity can come together? Or will the truth leave him feeling helpless in the face of insurmountable division? Tune in this week to find out!

Is it possible to bridge our differences when we're so wrapped up in fighting other people's wars? Join us as we explore this idea when Rob recommends to Ray the Park Chan-Wook (OLDBOY, SNOWPIERCER) classic JOINT SECURITY AREA.

Where would you rather vacation? Iceland or Australia?
Well, Ray's not giving Rob a choice this week as he takes him down under with the 2020 dramedy RAMS, starring Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Event Horizon) and Michael Caton (The Castle, Packed to the Rafters). This film follows Colin (Neill) and Les (Caton), two estranged brothers who have both taken up the family tradition of raising one of the rarest breeds of sheep in the world. The plot thickens when Colin suspects that Les' recently award-winning ram might be infected with the deadly and infectious disease, OJD, throwing their valley community into chaos as the threat looms over their shared livelihoods.
Will Rob find the family dynamics of siblings pushed into separate corners by their legacy appealing? Or will he find it hard to view the government reaction to this outbreak as reasonable through a post-Covid lense? Tune in to find out!

On this week's episode of SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FILM, Rob recommends to Ray Peter Bogdanovich's (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon) 1968 directorial debut TARGETS.
This taut thriller follows Bobby Thompson as he embarks on a mass shooting spree after seeming to suffer a mental break. Tangentially, aged actor Byron Orlok (the last US film performance of horror icon Boris Karloff) comes to the harsh realization that he is becoming irrelevant in an increasingly brutal world and announces his retirement. As Orlok wrestles with a final public appearance and the hounding of one more film by a desperate young director (played by Bogdanovich himself), his path unexpectedly careens towards Bobby's wake of violence in a shocking finale.
Will Boris Karloff's rich character work with Byron Orlok and Bobby's psychological break be enough to draw Ray in? Or will Bogdanovich's violent images and overt political messaging miss the mark? Tune in to find out!

For this week's episode of Say Hello to My Little Film Ray tries to fill a blind spot for Rob by recommending a feature from one of comedy's funniest voices, Albert Brooks. In his 1979 directorial debut Real Life, Albert Brooks crafts a biting send up of Cinema Verite or what we now commonly refer to as "reality TV".
Join us as we dissect the prescient nature of Real Life and connect the dots to the modern obsession with the genre, in which we hope to answer the question, can you truly film real life?
Will Rob's already established admiration for Albert Brooks find him loving this long-missed classic? Or will his deep held disdain for modern reality TV force him to throw Real Life onto the trash heap of history? Tune in to find out!

On this week's episode, Rob seeks to right a wrong when he learns the bombshell news that Ray has never before seen Andrew Nichols' 1997 Sci-Fi classic GATTACA.
In this detailed discussion on Gattaca, we scrutinize the societal implications of genetic engineering in a world where everyone is created to be perfect. Our conversation sheds light on themes such as fascism, genetic determinism, and the portrayal of a sanitized society as we journey into the realm of perfection and the struggle between nature and nurture.
Will the universal themes of perfection coupled with an unsung legacy in current sci-fi cinema be enough to sway Ray? Or will the film's quiet and meditative style leave him feeling cold? Tune in to find out!
